Birthday Cake Place Value Kit | Tens & Ones
Build • Count • Decorate • Learn 🎂
Make place value feel like a celebration with the Birthday Cake Place Value Kit — a playful, hands-on maths resource that helps children explore how numbers are built using tens and ones.
Instead of simply looking at numbers on a worksheet, children get to build them piece by piece.
Choose an activity card, look at the number, then decorate the birthday cake using the included candles and sprinkles. Each candle represents one group of ten, while each sprinkle represents one individual one.
For example:
34 = 3 tens + 4 ones
Add 3 candles and 4 sprinkles to the cake and watch the number come to life!
Children Can Explore:
- Place value
- Tens and ones
- Number composition and decomposition
- Counting by tens
- One-to-one counting
- Number recognition
- Base-10 concepts
- Fine motor development
- Independent problem-solving
How to Play
- Choose a birthday cake activity card.
- Look at the number shown.
- Decide how many tens and ones make that number.
- Add one candle for each ten.
- Add one sprinkle for each one.
- Count your pieces and check your birthday cake!
The included visual key — Candle = 10 / Sprinkle = 1 — provides an easy reference as children become familiar with the concept.
Learning Through Play
Place value can be an abstract concept for young learners. Giving children physical pieces to move, count and arrange helps make the relationship between a written number and its value more concrete.
The birthday theme adds imaginative play to early mathematics, turning number building into something children can see, touch and understand.
Perfect for maths centres, small-group learning, homeschool activities, intervention practice and hands-on learning at home.

Sizing Guild
We offer a variety of sizes to suit different play setups:
- Mini

(3 cups): Fits comfortably in the small IKEA Trofast bin. - Large
(5 cups): Ideal for the large Trofast bin or larger play trays. - Extra Large
(15 cups): Ideal for classroom setups or large Tuff Trays.

Please note that colour tones may vary slightly between batches, as each mix is hand-dyed using acrylic paint.
Wooden Collection Care
An Important Note About Wooden Toys: Wood is a natural material and as such, has various unique markings. Variations in wood grain, color, knots, texture or dye transfer are all natural occurrences in these hand-stained wooden products. These unique variations and markings are proof of quality, not defects. Wooden toys often have a distict odor to them, this is all natural.
Cleaning note: Wooden Toys should not be submerged in water in order to clean then. This will cause them to damage. To maintain the quality of the product, please wipe clean with natural cleaning agents only.
